SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

SPF is the single most important number in skincare — especially in South Africa, where UV radiation ranks among the highest in the world — and daily Heliocare 360° SPF 50+ is the foundation of every skin regime we prescribe at Star Aesthetic Centre.

In brief

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays. In South Africa, daily SPF 50+ is essential — UV radiation is extreme year-round, and unprotected skin ages faster and faces significantly higher risks of pigmentation and skin cancer.

What does SPF mean?

SPF — Sun Protection Factor — measures the relative ability of a sunscreen to protect against UVB radiation (the wavelength primarily responsible for sunburn and a significant contributor to skin cancer). An SPF 50 product filters approximately 98% of UVB rays; SPF 30 filters approximately 97%. The difference seems small but it is meaningful with daily use over years.

Critically, SPF only measures UVB protection. UVA rays (longer wavelength, responsible for premature ageing, DNA damage, and a significant driver of pigmentation) penetrate much deeper into the skin and are not captured by the SPF rating. Look for 'broad-spectrum' on the label — this indicates UVA protection is also included. Heliocare 360° products are broad-spectrum with exceptionally high UVA coverage.

UVA vs UVB — why both matter

UVB radiation (wavelengths 280–320nm) is the burn ray — responsible for sunburn, direct DNA damage in the epidermis, and a major cause of skin cancer. It is most intense between 10am and 3pm and is partly filtered by glass. SPF ratings measure UVB protection.

UVA radiation (320–400nm) penetrates the dermis — much deeper than UVB — and is the primary driver of photoageing: collagen breakdown, elastin degradation, and the formation of deep wrinkles. UVA passes through cloud and glass and is present at fairly constant intensity throughout the day, year-round. For medium to dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick III–VI), visible light (380–700nm) also independently triggers melanin production — this is why Heliocare 360° Pigment Solution, which filters visible light via Fernblock® plus iron oxides, is essential for these skin tones.

Choosing the right SPF for your skin in South Africa

Durban sits at 30°S latitude with intense year-round UV. SPF 50+ is the minimum recommendation — not just in summer. For oily and acne-prone skin: Heliocare 360° Gel Oil-Free SPF 50+ is lightweight, non-comedogenic, and won't exacerbate breakouts. For dry or normal skin: Heliocare 360° Fluid SPF 50+ provides hydration alongside protection. For Fitzpatrick Type III–VI skin with pigmentation: Heliocare 360° Pigment Solution is non-negotiable — it filters visible light that standard SPFs miss.

Application is as important as SPF value. Most people apply 25–50% of the required amount. A quarter teaspoon (1.25ml) is the recommended amount for the face and neck. Reapply every 2 hours during outdoor exposure. Oral Heliocare capsules provide systemic photo-protection and amplify topical SPF — strongly recommended for patients who spend significant time outdoors.

At Star Aesthetic Centre

Heliocare 360° is the exclusive SPF range we stock and prescribe at Star Aesthetic Centre. It is the most clinically comprehensive sunscreen available in South Africa — the only range with Fernblock® (Polypodium leucotomos extract), UVA, UVB, and visible light filtration. Every skin regime Niki and Dr Bangalee prescribe ends with Heliocare 360° as the morning step — without it, all other skincare investment is compromised.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need SPF if I stay indoors?

Yes, if you sit near windows. UVA penetrates standard glass and accumulates over years of daily, incidental exposure — at a desk, in a car, near windows. Heliocare 360° worn daily provides cumulative protection against this insidious UV ageing. Even on cloudy days, 80% of UV radiation reaches the surface.

Can dark skin skip SPF?

No — this is one of the most harmful skincare myths. Darker skin has more melanin, which provides some natural UV protection (roughly equivalent to SPF 13) — but it is not sufficient. Dark skin is highly susceptible to UV-driven pigmentation and melasma, and the risk of skin cancer, while lower than in fair skin, is not zero. Daily SPF 50+ is essential regardless of skin tone.

Should I use Heliocare Oral Capsules as well as topical SPF?

Oral Heliocare (Fernblock extract in capsule form) provides systemic photoprotection — an additional layer of antioxidant defence that works from within. It does not replace topical SPF but enhances it, particularly for patients with pigmentation concerns, those spending significant time outdoors, or those post-chemical peel. Dr Bangalee recommends oral Heliocare as an adjunct for most pigmentation patients.

What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens?

Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the skin surface and physically scatter UV rays. They are less irritating, safe in pregnancy, and ideal for sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat — they are lighter-textured but may irritate sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. Heliocare 360° combines both mechanisms for comprehensive coverage.
