Skin Booster Treatment

Deep Hydration & Skin Quality — Glow Without Added Volume

Not every concern is a volume concern. Where skin has become dull, thin or dehydrated, adding filler does not address the skin itself. Skin boosters are micro-injections of soft hyaluronic acid placed into the dermis, where it holds moisture and may support collagen production. They are intended to improve skin quality rather than facial shape. How much difference is noticeable varies between patients, and a course is usually needed.

What is Skin Booster Treatment?

A skin booster is a soft, low-viscosity hyaluronic acid injected in tiny amounts across the surface of an area — typically the cheeks, the full face, the neck, the décolletage or the hands. Unlike dermal filler, it is not cross-linked to hold structure. It is designed to spread through the dermis rather than sit in place, so it hydrates and conditions without adding any volume or changing your contours.

Hyaluronic acid holds many times its own weight in water. Placed into the dermis, it rehydrates from within in a way no topical serum can reach, improving elasticity, smoothing fine surface lines and restoring the light-reflective quality that makes skin read as healthy.

There is a second, slower effect: the presence of hydrated HA in the dermis, together with the micro-injury of the injections themselves, stimulates fibroblast activity and new collagen production over the following weeks. This is why a course of skin boosters improves skin progressively rather than all at once, and why results continue to develop after the final session.

How it Works

1

Skin Assessment

Dr. Bangalee assesses hydration, elasticity, texture and fine lines, and confirms that skin quality — rather than volume loss — is genuinely the problem being solved.
2

Planning

The treatment areas and the number of sessions are agreed. A course of two to three sessions spaced four weeks apart is standard for a first course; maintenance is usually a single session.
3

Preparation

The skin is cleansed and disinfected, and a medical-grade topical anaesthetic is applied for 20–30 minutes.
4

Micro-Injection

Using a very fine needle, small deposits of hyaluronic acid are placed in a grid pattern across the treatment area, at consistent depth in the dermis. Precision and even spacing are what produce an even result.
5

Massage

The area is gently massaged to distribute the product evenly and reduce the visibility of the injection blebs.
6

Aftercare

Ice is applied and written aftercare instructions are given. Your next session in the course is booked before you leave.

  • *The number of sessions required is determined at consultation. A first course is typically two to three sessions.

Expected Results & Timeline

Days 1–2: Small injection blebs settle; the skin already feels more hydrated. Weeks 2–4: Visible improvement in glow, smoothness and light reflection. Weeks 4–6 (after the full course): Where the treatment has worked well, patients report improved elasticity, softened fine lines and skin that holds moisture better; results vary and some see less change than others. Duration: commonly 6–9 months from a completed course, with maintenance typically discussed at around six months. Skin boosters do not change your facial shape at any point — if you are expecting a visible contour change, filler rather than a booster is the correct treatment.

Downtime & Aftercare:

Expect small raised injection blebs across the treated area for 12–24 hours — these are the product itself and settle as it disperses. Mild redness and pinpoint bruising are common and usually resolve within 24–48 hours. Make-up can be applied after 12 hours. Most patients plan treatment for a Friday if they would rather not be seen with visible blebs. Avoid saunas, steam and intense exercise for 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a skin booster and dermal filler?

Dermal filler is cross-linked to hold its shape and create structure — it adds volume and changes contour. A skin booster is not cross-linked — it disperses through the dermis to hydrate and condition, and deliberately adds no volume. Same base ingredient, entirely different job. Many patients eventually have both: filler for structure, boosters for skin quality.

How many sessions will I need?

A first course is typically two to three sessions, four weeks apart. This spacing lets each session build on the collagen response of the last. After the initial course, most patients maintain with one session every six months.

Will I have visible bumps afterwards?

Yes, briefly. Small raised blebs are visible for 12–24 hours — that is the product sitting where it was placed, before it disperses. They are entirely expected and settle on their own. Many patients book treatment for a Friday afternoon for this reason.

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied for 20–30 minutes and the needle used is very fine. Most patients describe it as a series of small pinpricks — tolerable, though the neck and décolletage tend to be more sensitive than the cheeks.

Can skin boosters be used on the neck and hands?

Yes — the neck, décolletage and backs of the hands are among the most rewarding areas, because they show ageing early and respond well to hydration and collagen stimulation. These areas are often neglected in favour of the face and end up mismatched with it.

Will a skin booster get rid of my wrinkles?

It will noticeably soften fine, superficial lines caused by dehydration and loss of elasticity. It will not remove deep static folds — those need filler — and it will not address movement lines such as frown lines or crow's feet, which need anti-wrinkle injections. Dr. Bangalee will tell you at consultation which category your lines fall into.

How soon before an event should I have this done?

Book your final session at least four weeks before the event. That allows the blebs to settle completely and, more importantly, gives the collagen response time to produce the glow you are actually booking for. Two days beforehand is too late.

Are skin boosters safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. Because skin boosters work by injection rather than by heat, light or chemical exfoliation, they carry a low risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and are generally suitable across Fitzpatrick skin types — a meaningful advantage for patients who have been cautious about laser or aggressive peels.

Can I combine skin boosters with other treatments?

Yes, and it is common. Skin boosters combine well with Dermapen microneedling, chemical peels and anti-wrinkle injections. Dr. Bangalee will sequence them appropriately — treatments are usually spaced rather than stacked in one visit, so the skin is not asked to recover from two things at once.

Who should not have skin boosters?

Skin boosters are not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an active skin infection or inflammatory flare in the treatment area, or in patients with a known hyaluronic acid allergy. A full medical history is taken at consultation.

Who Is This For?

  • Patients whose main concern is skin quality rather than shape — dullness, dehydration, crepiness or a loss of bounce and light reflection.
  • Those with fine, superficial lines that are not deep enough for filler and not caused by muscle movement, so are not suited to anti-wrinkle injections.
  • Anyone with dehydrated skin that no longer holds moisture, despite a good skincare routine — common in air-conditioned offices and in Durban humidity swings.
  • Patients wanting a glow before an event — a wedding, a milestone birthday — planned 6 weeks ahead so the result has time to build.
  • Those in their late twenties and thirties who want a preventative, quality-focused treatment before volume loss becomes the issue.
  • Patients wanting improvement in areas where filler is inappropriate, such as the neck, décolletage and back of the hands.

INJECTABLES

Is it volume you need — or better skin?

Skin boosters are the right answer for dull, dehydrated, crepey skin, and the wrong answer for volume loss. Dr. Bangalee will assess which one you are actually dealing with before recommending anything.
