Pigmentation Treatment
Restore Your Natural Glow — Expert Pigmentation Treatment in Durban
If you've struggled with pigmentation for years, you're not alone. Many patients have invested significant time and money into brightening products, only to find that stubborn dark patches persist despite their best efforts. While sunscreen and skincare are essential components of treatment, pigmentation — particularly melasma — is far more complex than most people realise.
Pigmentation is a chronic skin condition influenced by multiple factors, including sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, and genetics. Effective management requires more than a single product or treatment; it requires a comprehensive, medically guided approach tailored to your skin's unique needs.
In Durban's high-UV coastal climate, controlling pigmentation can be especially challenging. At Star Aesthetic Centre, Dr. Bangalee approaches pigmentation systematically, combining advanced clinical treatments, evidence-based skincare, and ongoing maintenance strategies to achieve the best possible outcomes. Most importantly, we believe in setting realistic expectations and working alongside patients to create long-term improvements in skin clarity, tone, and confidence.

What is Pigmentation Treatment?
Pigmentation treatment is the medical and aesthetic management of excess melanin production within the skin. Hyperpigmentation can present as melasma, sun damage, post-inflammatory pigmentation following acne or injury, or a combination of these concerns. While pigmentation is often viewed as a cosmetic issue, many forms — particularly melasma — are chronic medical conditions that require a structured treatment approach for successful long-term control.
Effective pigmentation management begins with identifying the underlying cause. In some cases, medical treatment may be recommended, including prescription topical therapies, oral medication, and anti-inflammatory treatments to help regulate the processes that drive excess pigment production. These medical interventions are often combined with strict sun protection to prevent recurrence and support lasting results.
Aesthetic treatments play an equally important role in improving skin clarity and accelerating visible improvement. Depending on the type and severity of pigmentation, treatment may include professional chemical peels, Dermapen microneedling, targeted depigmentation programmes such as Cosmelan®, and advanced medical-grade skincare designed to brighten the complexion and inhibit future pigment formation.
At Star Aesthetic Centre, we approach pigmentation as a comprehensive treatment programme rather than a single procedure. By combining medical management, evidence-based aesthetic treatments, carefully selected home-care products, and daily high-factor sun protection, we are able to achieve safer, more predictable, and longer-lasting results. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, taking into account the patient's skin type, lifestyle, underlying triggers, and long-term goals.

Expected Results & Timeline
Week 1–2: Home-care depigmenting actives begin working; cosmelan® peeling phase if applicable. Week 3–4: Early fading of surface pigmentation; skin tone becoming visibly more even. Week 6–8: Significant reduction in dark spot intensity; improved overall radiance. Week 10–12: Substantial pigmentation correction with continued improvement through ongoing home-care. Note: melasma is a chronic condition — ongoing management prevents recurrence.
Downtime & Aftercare:

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best treatment for melasma?
There is no single treatment that is considered the best for every patient. The most appropriate treatment depends on the type and severity of melasma, your skin type, underlying triggers, and medical history. Effective management often combines medical therapy, medical-grade skincare, professional in-clinic treatments, and strict daily sun protection. A personalised assessment is essential to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
Why does my pigmentation keep coming back?
Pigmentation — especially melasma — is often a chronic condition rather than a one-time problem. Even after successful treatment, the pigment-producing cells in your skin can be reactivated by triggers such as sun exposure, hormones, heat, and inflammation. This is why daily SPF, medical-grade skincare, and, in some cases, maintenance treatments are essential. Recurrence does not necessarily mean your treatment has failed — it is simply the nature of the condition and why long-term management is so important.
Is it safe to treat pigmentation on darker skin tones?
Yes. Pigmentation can be safely treated on darker skin tones when the correct treatments and techniques are used. Because darker skin contains more active melanin, treatment should always be tailored to your skin type to minimise the risk of further pigmentation. A personalised approach, combined with appropriate medical management, professional treatments, and daily sun protection, provides the safest and most effective results.
What is the Mesoestetic Cosmelan® Depigmenting Treatment and how is it different from other treatments?
Cosmelan® is a professional depigmentation treatment designed to improve the appearance of stubborn pigmentation, including melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Unlike treatments that focus only on removing existing pigment, Cosmelan® also helps regulate excess melanin production, making it an effective option for managing recurrent pigmentation. Treatment includes an in-clinic procedure followed by a structured home-care programme to support and maintain results.
Do I really need to wear sunscreen every day?
Yes. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most important parts of any pigmentation treatment programme. UV exposure can trigger and worsen pigmentation, making it more difficult to achieve and maintain results. Consistent daily SPF, combined with the right skincare and professional treatments, helps protect your skin and reduce the risk of pigmentation returning.
How long does pigmentation treatment take?
The length of treatment depends on the type and severity of your pigmentation, your skin type, and how well you follow your treatment plan. Some patients notice improvement within a few weeks, while more complex conditions, such as melasma, may require several months of treatment and ongoing maintenance. During your consultation, we'll provide a personalised treatment plan and discuss what you can realistically expect.
Can the pill or HRT cause pigmentation?
Yes. Hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are well-known triggers for melasma in people who are predisposed to developing pigmentation. In susceptible individuals, hormones such as oestrogen can stimulate melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment), particularly when combined with UV exposure.
If your pigmentation appears to be hormone-related, adjusting your contraceptive method or HRT may form part of your overall treatment plan. However, this decision should always be made in consultation with both Dr. Bangalee and your gynaecologist, taking your individual health needs into account.
Can I treat pigmentation during pregnancy?
Pregnancy itself is a common cause of melasma ('mask of pregnancy'). Treatment options during pregnancy are restricted — many brightening actives (retinoids, AHAs, hydroquinone) are contraindicated. Safe options are limited to gentle skincare and strict SPF use. Dr. Bangalee will advise the safest approach for pregnant patients.
Will skin peels help with my dark spots?
Yes. Professional chemical peels can be highly effective in treating superficial pigmentation by accelerating cell turnover and encouraging the removal of pigmented skin cells. Different types of peels are selected based on your skin type, the cause of your pigmentation, and your treatment goals.
For best results, a series of peels combined with a personalised home-care routine is usually recommended. Deeper or more stubborn pigmentation, such as dermal melasma, may require more intensive treatments in addition to chemical peels, as determined during your consultation.
Is there a permanent solution to pigmentation?
In most cases, no. While many forms of pigmentation can be significantly improved or even cleared, there is no guaranteed permanent cure — particularly for conditions such as melasma, which has a tendency to recur.
The goal of treatment is long-term control rather than a one-time fix. With the right combination of in-clinic treatments, a personalised home-care routine, and daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen, most patients can achieve excellent, long-lasting results and keep pigmentation well managed.
Do you offer the Mesoestetic Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment?
Yes. We offer the Mesoestetic Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment following a consultation to determine whether it is the most appropriate treatment for your pigmentation concerns. As this is a specialised treatment that is ordered specifically for each patient, full payment is required upfront before the treatment is scheduled.

Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Cosmelan 2 Maintenance Cream
Cosmelan 2 is prescribed by Dr. Bangalee specifically for patients who have had the professional Cosmelan peel. This is the home maintenance cream that protects and extends the peel results — the maintenance phase is as important as the peel itself. Use exactly as prescribed.
Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Fast Skin Repair
Apply in the immediate post-procedure phase after the Cosmelan peel or Dermapen microneedling session. Use 2–3 times daily for the first 5 days of the acute recovery phase.
Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Melan Tranex Kit
The Melan Tranex Kit contains everything you need to start the Melan Tran3x depigmentation protocol at home. Dr. Bangalee prescribes this as the foundation of the home care component of your pigmentation treatment.
Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Melan Tran3x Concentrate
Apply every evening as your targeted treatment serum. The Tran3x multi-pathway system targets melanin production at three stages simultaneously — this is the core product driving your depigmentation results.
Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Melan Tran3x Gel-Cream
Apply every morning as your daytime moisturiser. Maintains the melanin suppression from the evening Concentrate throughout the day. Do not substitute with a regular moisturiser during the active protocol.
Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Melan Recovery
Use morning and evening as your soothing moisturiser if your skin becomes sensitised or reactive during the protocol. Essential in the first 2–4 weeks when sensitivity is highest.
Essentialmesoestetic
Mesoestetic Mesoprotech Melan 130+ Pigment Control SPF50+
Apply every morning without exception throughout the entire pigmentation treatment and for at least 6 months after. UV exposure is the primary trigger for melanin overproduction — without SPF the protocol is working against the stimulus you recreate every time you go outdoors.
