Facial Thread Lift
Non-Surgical Lift & Collagen Stimulation — No General Anaesthetic
There is a stage — usually somewhere in the forties and fifties — where the face has not lost volume so much as position. The cheek that used to sit high is now sitting lower. The jawline that used to have a clean border now blurs into the neck. Filler will not fix that, because the problem is not emptiness, it is descent. A thread lift lifts the tissue back and holds it there while your own collagen builds along the thread to sustain it.

What is Facial Thread Lift?
A facial thread lift uses fine, absorbable polydioxanone (PDO) threads — the same material used in surgical sutures for decades — introduced beneath the skin through a small entry point using a blunt cannula.
The threads used for lifting are barbed or cogged. These barbs grip the underlying tissue so that when the thread is drawn back along its path, the tissue is repositioned upward and held in place. Smooth, non-barbed threads may also be used in a supporting role, where the goal is collagen stimulation rather than lift.
The second, slower effect matters as much as the first. The presence of the PDO thread triggers a controlled healing response, laying down new collagen along the entire thread path. Over the following months this collagen forms a supportive framework — which is why the result often looks better at three months than it did at three weeks.
By roughly six months the threads themselves have fully dissolved and been absorbed by the body. The collagen they generated is what continues to hold the result. It is important to be clear about the limits of this: a thread lift is not a facelift. It addresses mild to moderate laxity with a subtle, natural degree of lift. Where sagging is advanced, Dr. Bangalee will say so directly and discuss surgical referral rather than promise a result threads cannot deliver.

Expected Results & Timeline
Immediately: A visible lift, partly masked by swelling. Days 3–7: Swelling and tightness settle; the lift becomes clearer and the tight, pulling sensation eases. Weeks 2–4: The result looks natural and settled — this is roughly the true lift the threads achieved. Months 3–6: Continued improvement as new collagen forms along the thread path, often making the result better at month three than at week three. Duration: 12–18 months. The threads dissolve at around six months; the collagen they stimulated sustains the outcome. The lift is subtle and natural — it will not reproduce a surgical facelift, and Dr. Bangalee will tell you before you book if that is what your anatomy actually requires.
Downtime & Aftercare:
Expect swelling, tenderness and a tight or pulling sensation for 3–7 days, and bruising at the entry points is common. Most patients take 2–3 days before returning to social activity. For two weeks afterwards you must avoid wide mouth opening, heavy chewing, dental procedures, facial massage, sleeping on your side, and intense exercise — the threads need time to anchor. Sleeping slightly elevated for the first few nights helps considerably with swelling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a thread lift the same as a facelift?
No, and the difference matters. A surgical facelift removes excess skin and repositions deeper structures under general anaesthetic, with results lasting many years. A thread lift repositions tissue subtly using absorbable sutures, with results lasting 12–18 months. Threads suit mild to moderate laxity. If your sagging is advanced, threads will disappoint you — Dr. Bangalee will say so at consultation rather than after.
Does a thread lift hurt?
Local anaesthetic is infiltrated along the thread paths, so the procedure itself is well tolerated — you will feel pulling and pressure rather than pain. Afterwards, expect tenderness and a tight, pulling sensation for several days, which is normal and manageable with simple analgesia.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients are back to normal daily activity within 2–3 days, though swelling and tenderness persist for up to a week. The more restrictive part is the two-week period in which you must avoid wide mouth opening, heavy chewing, dental work, facial massage, side-sleeping and intense exercise, to let the threads anchor properly.
Can the threads be seen or felt?
The threads sit beneath the skin and are not visible. In the first weeks some patients can feel slight irregularity or a faint pulling along a thread path, especially when smiling broadly — this settles as swelling resolves and the threads integrate. Any persistent visible dimpling should be reported to Dr. Bangalee promptly.
What happens when the threads dissolve?
PDO threads are fully absorbed by around six months, leaving nothing behind. The lift is then maintained by the new collagen framework the threads generated along their path. This is why the result outlasts the threads themselves, and why the treatment continues improving after the threads are gone.
How many threads will I need?
This depends entirely on the area treated and the degree of lift required — determined at consultation, not over the phone. Jawline definition may need relatively few; a fuller mid-face lift needs more. Dr. Bangalee will give you the number and the cost before the procedure is booked.
Can a thread lift be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it often should be. Threads lift, filler restores volume, anti-wrinkle injections soften movement lines — they address different components of facial ageing. Dr. Bangalee typically sequences them across separate visits so each result can be assessed independently and the recovery periods do not overlap.
What could go wrong?
Recognised risks include asymmetry, visible dimpling or puckering, thread migration or extrusion, prolonged swelling, bruising, and infection at an entry point. These are uncommon in experienced hands but are not zero, and you will be counselled on all of them before consenting. Report any concern early — most issues are straightforward to manage if addressed promptly.
Am I too young or too old for a thread lift?
There is no strict age limit; there is a tissue-quality limit. Threads hold best where skin still has some thickness and elasticity — often the late thirties through fifties. Very thin or heavily sun-damaged skin holds threads poorly, and advanced laxity is beyond what they can lift. This is assessed individually.
Who should not have a thread lift?
Thread lifts are not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in patients with active infection or inflammation in the area, uncontrolled autoimmune disease, bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy that cannot be safely interrupted, or a history of keloid scarring. Full medical history is taken at consultation.
Who Is This For?
- ✓Patients with mild to moderate sagging of the mid-face, jowls or jawline who are not yet candidates for — or do not want — surgical facelift.
- ✓Those wanting definition returned to the jawline as the lower face has begun to soften and lose its border.
- ✓Patients seeking a lift specifically, rather than volume — where filler would add fullness but not reposition anything.
- ✓Those wanting the collagen-stimulating benefit along the thread path in addition to the lift itself.
- ✓Patients who cannot take extended time off and need a treatment with days of recovery rather than weeks.
- ✓Those with reasonable skin quality and thickness — thread lifts hold best in skin that still has some elasticity to work with.

Not sagging enough for surgery — but not happy either?
A thread lift consultation with Dr. Bangalee begins with an honest assessment of whether threads can deliver what you are picturing. If they cannot, he will tell you, and explain what would.
