Microneedling (Dermapen)

Microneedling — performed with a device like the Dermapen — is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for skin texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and skin laxity, using the body's own healing response to rebuild collagen and elastin from within.

In brief

Microneedling uses a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body's natural repair process and stimulating new collagen and elastin production. It treats acne scarring, skin texture, pores, and early laxity.

How microneedling works

A microneedling device (most commonly a motorised pen-style device like the Dermapen) creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin using fine, sterile needles. These micro-injuries are invisible to the naked eye but are sufficient to trigger the skin's wound-healing cascade — a process that releases growth factors, stimulates fibroblasts, and results in new collagen and elastin production over the following weeks.

The needle depth is precisely adjustable from 0.25mm (superficial, for general rejuvenation) to 2.5mm (deeper, for acne scarring and significant laxity). The appropriate depth depends on the treatment area and skin concern — the face has varying thickness in different regions, and Dr Bangalee adjusts depth accordingly.

What microneedling treats

Microneedling is highly effective for acne scarring (particularly atrophic or depressed scars), enlarged pores, rough skin texture, fine lines, early skin laxity, and stretch marks. The new collagen produced fills in depressed scars, tightens pores, smooths surface irregularities, and firms the overall skin structure.

It is also used as a delivery vehicle — the micro-channels created by needling allow active ingredients (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, growth factor serums) to penetrate far more deeply than they would through intact skin, amplifying their effect. This is used at Star Aesthetic Centre to target specific concerns alongside the collagen-induction benefit.

Treatment, recovery, and results timeline

A topical numbing cream is applied 30–45 minutes before treatment. The microneedling procedure itself takes 30–60 minutes. Immediately after, skin appears red — like a mild to moderate sunburn — which is the expected inflammatory response. This typically resolves within 24–48 hours. No heavy exercise, steam, or swimming for 48 hours.

Collagen production peaks 4–6 weeks after each session. The full impact of a course of treatments continues to improve for 3–6 months after the final session. Most patients require 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results on acne scarring; general skin rejuvenation often achieves excellent results in 2–3 sessions.

At Star Aesthetic Centre

Dermapen microneedling is one of the core skin treatment protocols at Star Aesthetic Centre. Dr Bangalee uses medical-grade Dermapen technology with precision depth control. For patients with acne scarring, microneedling is often combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or active serums to accelerate healing and enhance collagen production. A personalised treatment plan and realistic timeline for results are discussed at your initial consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is microneedling painful?

Topical numbing cream is applied before every session, making the procedure very tolerable. A vibrating sensation from the device is felt — not sharp pain. Deeper needle settings (for acne scarring) may feel more intense at certain points, but most patients complete treatment without discomfort.

How many microneedling sessions do I need?

For general skin rejuvenation and mild pigmentation: 2–3 sessions. For acne scarring, enlarged pores, or significant texture concerns: 4–6 sessions. Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart to allow collagen production to occur between visits. Maintenance sessions once or twice yearly are recommended thereafter.

Can microneedling be done on dark skin?

Yes — microneedling is safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types including darker skin tones, and is one of the preferred treatments for acne scarring in darker skin precisely because it does not cause the UV sensitivity or pigmentation risks associated with laser treatments. A qualified practitioner will select the appropriate needle depth and protocol for your skin.

When will I see microneedling results?

An initial glow and improved skin texture is visible within 2 weeks of the first session. Significant improvement in acne scarring and skin quality builds over 3–6 months as new collagen matures. The timeline is biological — collagen takes time to build, remodel, and consolidate.
