Niacinamide

Niacinamide — vitamin B3 — is one of the most versatile and reliably tolerated actives in skincare, addressing pore size, oiliness, pigmentation, and barrier function simultaneously, without the irritation associated with stronger actives.

In brief

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a multitasking skincare ingredient that reduces pore appearance, controls excess oil, fades pigmentation, and strengthens the skin barrier — all with exceptional tolerability across skin types.

What niacinamide does for skin

Niacinamide works through several distinct mechanisms depending on concentration. At 2–5%, it inhibits the transfer of melanosomes (melanin packets) from melanocytes to skin cells, visibly reducing hyperpigmentation and uneven tone over 4–8 weeks. At 5–10%, it reduces sebum production by normalising the activity of sebaceous glands, shrinking the appearance of enlarged pores and reducing oiliness and shine.

It also reinforces the skin barrier by increasing ceramide and fatty acid production in the epidermis. A stronger skin barrier retains moisture better, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and making skin more resilient to environmental stressors, irritants, and active ingredients.

Who benefits most from niacinamide

Niacinamide is one of very few actives that genuinely suits all skin types. For oily and acne-prone skin, it reduces sebum, tightens pores, and has mild anti-inflammatory properties that calm breakouts. For dry or sensitive skin, it strengthens the barrier and improves moisture retention. For mature or pigmentation-prone skin, it fades discolouration and complements anti-ageing routines.

For South African patients with Fitzpatrick Type III–VI skin, niacinamide is a particularly valuable first-line pigmentation treatment because it is non-irritating. Unlike some brightening ingredients, it does not carry a risk of triggering paradoxical darkening or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, making it safe to use continuously without breaks.

How to use niacinamide effectively

Niacinamide is water-soluble and best applied as a serum after cleansing and before heavier moisturisers. It is compatible with almost every other skincare ingredient — including retinol, AHAs, vitamin C, and SPF. The old advice that niacinamide and vitamin C should not be combined has been shown by modern research to be unfounded; the reaction that causes flushing only occurs at high temperatures not relevant to skincare.

Use a 10% niacinamide formulation twice daily for visible results on pores and pigmentation within 4 weeks. It can be used indefinitely as a maintenance ingredient with no requirement to cycle off.

At Star Aesthetic Centre

Niacinamide features in several products we recommend at Star Aesthetic Centre — particularly in ranges designed for oily, acne-prone, or pigmentation-prone skin. It is a core ingredient in the maintenance regime Niki recommends for patients with combination or breakout-prone skin after their skin assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use niacinamide with retinol?

Yes — and it is actually one of the best ingredient pairings. Niacinamide helps buffer retinol's irritating effects by strengthening the skin barrier, while retinol provides the cell-turnover and collagen benefits that niacinamide does not. Apply niacinamide in the morning and retinol in the evening, or layer niacinamide before retinol in the same evening routine.

How long does niacinamide take to work?

For pore size and oiliness: 4–6 weeks. For pigmentation reduction: 8–12 weeks of consistent twice-daily use. Niacinamide is not a rapid-result ingredient — its value lies in steady, sustained improvement with no downside.

Can niacinamide cause flushing?

Pure niacinamide at the concentrations used in skincare does not cause flushing. Flushing is associated with niacin (nicotinic acid) — a different form of vitamin B3. They are chemically similar but pharmacologically distinct. If you notice redness after applying a niacinamide product, it is likely a reaction to another ingredient in the formulation.
