Dynamic Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are the lines that form — and deepen over time — from repeated facial muscle contractions: every smile, frown, squint, and raised eyebrow etches the overlying skin a little more deeply with each passing year.

In brief

Dynamic wrinkles are lines caused by repeated facial muscle movement — forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet are the most common. They are the primary target of Anti-Wrinkle Treatment using botulinum toxin.

What causes dynamic wrinkles?

Every facial expression requires muscles to contract. When a muscle contracts repeatedly over years, the overlying skin folds along the same line each time. Young skin is elastic enough to spring back after each contraction. As we age, collagen and elastin fibres weaken — the skin gradually loses its ability to fully recover, and the repeated fold becomes a visible crease that deepens with time.

The most common dynamic wrinkles are: forehead lines (frontalis muscle), frown lines between the brows (glabella / corrugator muscles), and crow's feet at the corners of the eyes (orbicularis oculi). Other areas include bunny lines on the nose, lip lines, and neck bands.

Dynamic wrinkles vs static wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles appear or deepen during facial expression and are caused by muscle movement. Static wrinkles are present at rest — they have become permanently etched into the skin and remain visible even when the face is relaxed. Early dynamic wrinkles disappear completely at rest; established ones remain visible at rest too.

This distinction matters for treatment: dynamic wrinkles respond well to botulinum toxin (Anti-Wrinkle Treatment), which temporarily relaxes the muscle creating the fold. Static wrinkles — volume loss, deep folds, and skin laxity — are better addressed with dermal fillers, chemical peels, or skin-resurfacing treatments. Many patients require a combination.

At Star Aesthetic Centre

Anti-Wrinkle Treatment using botulinum toxin (Botox®) is the primary treatment for dynamic wrinkles at Star Aesthetic Centre — smoothing forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet by temporarily relaxing the muscles that create them. Dr. Rajeev Bangalee tailors the treatment to each patient's facial anatomy, using precise dosing and placement to deliver natural-looking results. A 2-week review is included with every treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can dynamic wrinkles be prevented?

To a degree — starting Anti-Wrinkle Treatment before lines become deeply etched (preventive treatment in the late 20s to early 30s) can slow the progression of dynamic to static wrinkles. Daily SPF 50+ use also significantly reduces UV-related collagen breakdown that accelerates wrinkling.

Will Anti-Wrinkle Treatment remove my dynamic wrinkles completely?

For early dynamic wrinkles — those that appear during expression and disappear at rest — botulinum toxin treatment can provide near-complete smoothing. For established dynamic wrinkles that are visible at rest, treatment softens them significantly but may not erase them entirely. A combination of botulinum toxin and filler may give the best result for deep, established lines.
