What causes static wrinkles?
Static wrinkles develop from three main processes: loss of subcutaneous fat and hyaluronic acid (which deflates the skin from beneath), breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres (which weakens the skin's structural support), and repeated muscle movement that eventually carves permanent creases into skin that has lost its elasticity. Sun damage accelerates all three processes significantly.
Common static wrinkles include nasolabial folds (smile lines from nose to mouth corners), marionette lines (from corners of the mouth downward), tear troughs (hollows under the eyes), and deep forehead or frown lines that remain visible even at rest.
Treatment options for static wrinkles
Static wrinkles respond to treatments that address the underlying cause — volume replacement and structural support — rather than muscle relaxation. Dermal fillers are the primary treatment: hyaluronic acid fillers restore lost volume, fill in folds, and rehydrate the skin from within. Results are immediate and last 9–18 months.
For skin texture and collagen rebuilding, chemical peels and microneedling stimulate new collagen production over time — smoothing fine static lines from within. These are often combined with fillers for comprehensive treatment of both volume loss and skin quality. Botulinum toxin is sometimes added for any dynamic component that remains.
