What is PRP and how is it prepared?
PRP is prepared by drawing a small sample of your own blood and processing it in a centrifuge, which separates it into layers based on density. The platelet-rich layer — concentrated well above normal blood levels — is drawn off and used for treatment. Platelets contain growth factors that play a central role in the body's natural healing and tissue-repair processes.
Because PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is essentially eliminated, which is one of its key advantages over synthetic alternatives.
How PRP is used in treatment
PRP is most commonly combined with microneedling (Dermapen) — the micro-channels created by needling allow the concentrated growth factors to penetrate more deeply, amplifying the skin's natural collagen-building response beyond what microneedling alone achieves. This combination is particularly used for more significant acne scarring and severe pigmentation, where an enhanced healing response is beneficial.
Dr. Bangalee determines whether PRP is appropriate, and whether it should be combined with microneedling or another treatment, based on your specific concern and skin assessment at consultation.
