How SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore works — the science

The skin's barrier function depends critically on the stratum corneum lipid matrix — a layered structure of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids that seals the skin against transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and protects against environmental insults. Research from the University of California established that these three lipids must be present in a specific molar ratio (approximately 1:1:1) for the barrier to function optimally — an excess or deficiency of any one lipid disrupts barrier structure.

Triple Lipid Restore provides 2% ceramides 1 and 3, 4% cholesterol, and 2% fatty acids in ratios formulated to match the skin's natural barrier composition. Ceramides are the primary structural component of the lipid matrix, forming the lamellar layers between corneocytes that prevent water loss. Cholesterol provides fluidity and structural integrity. Fatty acids (particularly linoleic acid) are precursors to ceramide synthesis and have anti-inflammatory properties.
