Yes — this is one of the key advantages of Dermapen over ablative laser for South African patients. Microneedling does not use heat or light energy, meaning it does not carry the pigmentation risk (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation) that some laser treatments can cause in Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin tones. It is well tolerated across all skin tones, including darker skin, when the device settings are matched to your skin type.

For general skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing, 3 sessions (4–6 weeks apart) deliver excellent results. For acne scarring, 4–6 sessions are typically needed for significant improvement. Severe scarring may require more. Dr. Bangalee will give you a realistic expectation at your first consultation.

Topical anaesthetic cream is applied 30–45 minutes before treatment, making Dermapen very well-tolerated. Most patients describe a mild vibrating or scratching sensation rather than pain. The face may feel flushed and warm immediately after — this settles within hours.

The new collagen stimulated by Dermapen continues to remodel for up to 6 months post-treatment. Results from a full series of 3–6 treatments can last 12–18 months, depending on skin type, age, and lifestyle. Quarterly maintenance treatments are recommended for ongoing rejuvenation.

Yes — this is one of Dermapen's most impactful applications. Microneedling breaks down the fibrous scar tissue that creates textural irregularities and stimulates the formation of new, smoother collagen. Multiple sessions are required for significant scar improvement — typically 4–6 sessions for moderate to severe acne scarring.

Dr. Bangalee selects serums based on your specific concern: hyaluronic acid for hydration and plumping, vitamin C for brightening and antioxidant support, growth factor serums for enhanced healing and collagen stimulation, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for advanced skin regeneration. The micro-channels created by Dermapen increase serum absorption.

Avoid makeup for the first 24–48 hours to allow the micro-channels to close and prevent the risk of infection. From day 3, mineral powder foundation is appropriate. Full makeup can typically resume from day 3–5 depending on how quickly your skin heals.

Active inflamed acne is a contraindication for microneedling over the affected areas — the risk of spreading bacteria and worsening infection is significant. We recommend managing active acne first, then using Dermapen to address the residual scarring. Dr. Bangalee will assess and advise appropriately.

Measurably so. Dermapen uses medical-grade, sterile, single-use cartridges with precisely controlled needle depth (0.1mm–2.5mm). Home rollers use dull, fixed-depth needles that create tearing rather than clean micro-channels, carry significant infection risk, and cannot achieve the depths required for collagen stimulation. Never use a home roller on active acne scarring — it can worsen scarring.

Yes. The collagen stimulation from microneedling improves skin elasticity and can provide a meaningful tightening effect — particularly in areas of mild laxity like the lower face, neck, and jowls. For more significant skin laxity, Dr. Bangalee may recommend combining Dermapen with other treatments.
